Chelsea kick off £ 1 billion redevelopment of Stamford Bridge with planning extension until April – The Sun

CHELSEA received a huge boost in its £ 1 billion plans to redevelop the Stamford bridge after it was granted an extension of planning permission by the government.

The club’s previous deal to extend the capacity of their ground to 60,000 seats expired during the blockade, with what is unclear what the future holds for the stadium.

And now the housing secretary, Robert Jenrick, has announced that Chelsea has been given in April to begin construction work.

In an attempt to help the economy, Jenrick said that “the deadlines for planning permits will be extended … (this) will prevent the blockage of work temporarily interrupted by the pandemic”.

This benefits Chelsea as their plans expired on March 31st, with the blockade starting on March 23rd.

They are now eligible for an extension until April 1st.

Chelsea wanted to demolish Stamford Bridge, which boasts 41,600 seats to make way for new 60,000-seat terrain.

The giants of West London were allowed to start work in March 2017, but the work failed to take off in the end.

Commenting on the expiration of their planning permission, the club said: “Chelsea Football Club recognizes that the planning permission we have obtained for a new stadium expires on March 31, 2020.

“We are grateful to all our fans and stakeholders, in particular Hammersmith and Fulham Council, for their patience and understanding on the matter.

“We will continue to consider our options for a new stadium if economic conditions improve.”
