Janssen responds: “I also wanted to finish where I started”

Theo Janssen fully understands that Arjen Robben has chosen to return to FC Groningen, while Eljero Elia and Karim El Ahmadi may move to FC Twente. The former professional footballer ended his career with Vitesse.

“I went back to Vitesse at the end of my career, so I get it when Robben talks about club love,” says Janssen in conversation with RTL News. “I also wanted to finish where I started. But I came from Ajax, so the step is not as big as from Bayern Munich to Groningen.”

Janssen retired from football in 2014, but still played two seasons with Vitesse. The step was therefore less than Robben’s. “Although I must admit that I would have returned if Vitesse had played in the Kitchen Champion Division. Vitesse is just my club, like Groningen is for Robben,” said Janssen.
