Robert Lewandowski appointed Bundesliga player of the season

Robert Lewandowski. The most feared striker in the world. Ice cold in front of the gate. And he loves to break records and set new milestones. The Bavarian-based terminator has been crowned Bundesliga player of the season for their performances in the 2019/20 season, and BOY has done everything to earn this.

This season was Lewandowski’s most productive Bundesliga season before the goal. He has scored an incredible 33 goals so far, with one game left (against Wolfsburg, where he can score another 5 if the story is to be repeated). However, it would be extremely unfair to assign the award and all the praise Lewandowski has received only to the goals. Let’s look at some of the other things Lewangoalski brings to the table.

Intelligence in the last third

Lewandowski has a total of 6 assists in all competitions this season. In the Bundesliga he achieved an average of 1.2 important passes per game and in the Champions League (Whoscored) 2.2 (!). His quick movement and trick also resulted in him being fouled an average of 1.4 times per game, which often put the team in good standard situations. All of this makes him an absolute force to be reckoned with in defending the opposition.

Midfield work rate and passing game

Those of you who have followed Bayern closely in the past two to three seasons, and particularly this season, will have noticed this point, and this is evident in Lewandowski’s playing style. Lewandowski very often falls deep into midfield, takes the team out of tight spaces and starts the game with a cute pass, a dink over the top or a diagonal pass to shift the game to the wings. His work speed is excellent and he is currently a more complete player than ever. With an average of 0.5 long balls per game and a 75% success rate (high for a striker), this man has often been crucial as an additional midfielder this season.

Connect with Müller and make room for teammates

Nobody reads Müller’s movements as well as Lewandowski. Period. If you work side by side in front, the two are simply unstoppable. They love to create chaos together, and Lewandowski is one of the main reasons why Müller was so effective. Lewandowski creates space by pulling defenders away and allowing his criminal partner to perform his patented “space interpreting”. Their connecting game is downright telepathic, and although Müller receives a lot of recognition for the devastation they cause, Müller is most effective when he works with the Pole. Nobody understands Müller’s movements better than Lewandowski, who always makes the perfect run to hit the ball. This means that, according to Müllendowski’s phenomenal shape in front of the goal, Müller has the record for most assists in a single Bundesliga season.

Lewandowski was possibly the best footballer in the world this season. I think if he repeats this form in the Champions League and takes Bayern to the end, he is entitled to the season’s UEFA player AND the FIFA Ballon D’Or Prize.
