Former Tottenham boss Tim Sherwood urged Manchester United to bid on Leicester City star Caglar Soyuncu this summer, as the defender would be the perfect partner for Harry Maguire.

The Red Devils spent £ 80 million on Maguire last summer, but it took until the last few days of the window to complete the deal while the Foxes held out for a record high.

United have held five unmatched games in their last seven games while Maguire has made a good partnership with Victor Lindelof.

However, the Red Devils will try to continue their progress in the coming season and the central defender is seen as an area in which they can make further marginal gains.

And Sherwood, who believes the club is three players from the challenge, believes that Soyuncu would be the perfect signature.

‘I agree with Michael [Owen] I think they are three players away, “Sherwood told DAZN.

‘I think they need extra center back coverage. I think Soyuncu – I know Robbie Savage won’t be happy because they are taking him from Leicester – but if the money is fair they sell, as they did with Harry Maguire.

‘I think it would be exceptional there. He can play on the front foot and keep them up the field. “

Sherwood says United has already entered into an agreement for Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish.

Former midfielder Blackburn has managed Grealish at Villa Park and says the 24-year-old will move to Old Trafford.

But beyond that, Sherwood believes that a center forward should be the third signature that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will make this summer.

“They need a number 9,” said Sherwoord.

‘Find a number 9. It is very difficult to go out and get a Harry Kane, but if they managed to do it – they are the largest club in the world – then they can challenge. They are so close.

‘This guy Bruno Fernandes has made such a difference to them. It’s the last piece of the puzzle they needed, but the dead piece of the puzzle that is Paul Pogba brought him back to life, brought him back to the party. “
