Paris Saint-Germain launched its new home shirt for the 2020/21 season, celebrating the club’s 50th anniversary by reviving an iconic design from the early years.

To be worn by the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Angel Di Maria next season, the shirt is designed by Nike and includes the “Together We Are Paris” tagline.

The new shirt is a great tribute to the past, with a thick red stripe in the center of the chest, edged in white against a deep navy blue that instantly shouts “PSG”.

The shirt is combined with simple navy blue shorts, while the mainly navy blue sock has a horizontal red band, still delimited by a thin white, to complete and match the shirt.

PSG initially wore red shirts when they first formed in 1970, adopting the now classic navy blue with red and white trim three years later. The iconic shirt that next season’s design is based on what was created by the French stylist and club president Daniel Hechter, making an early connection with the Paris fashion scene: they remain among the most innate fashionable clubs in Europe.

Hechter was presumed to have taken inspiration from Ajax’s broad red stripe, adding navy blue to more closely resemble the French flag. However, it was actually a Ford Mustang and its center strip which was the true source of its design, which was soon approved by the PSG card.

PSG has used various variations on the Hechter red stripe theme over the years, but the 2020/21 shirt now brings it back to the beginning.

The 2020/21 away shirt is largely the opposite of the home colors, white with a dark blue border on both sides of the unmistakable red stripe. The main difference in the design is that it also features a collar. It will be worn with white shorts and white socks of the same design as the domestic strip.
