Drew Eubanks deserves a spot on the Spurs roster

As we continue to reflect on Spurs’ options between seasons, we take stock of what we can expect ahead of free agency.

Three vets are entering the final year of their contract: Patty Mills, LaMarcus Aldridge, and Rudy Gay.

The Spurs have an option on Trey Lyles.

Five rookie contracts are still active: Derrick White, Lonnie Walker IV, Chimezie Metu, Keldon Johnson and Luka Samanic.

Dejounte Murray recovered last October for an amount of $ 64 million for 4 years.

Marco Belinelli and Bryn Forbes are free agents.

Is it safe to assume that Tyler Zeller will make a mandatory appearance at the Spurs camp before packing up and leaving Alamo City?

It is not known whether Jakob Poeltl will return, but as Marilyn Dubinski reported, he may be a little more likely to stay after his time in Orlando with the Youth Movement.

The biggest question mark for the Spurs concerns the possible free agency of DeMar DeRozan. With the pandemic altering this NBA season as well as the next, the spending limit could also be vulnerable. DeRozan would certainly be one of the more desirable free agents, but that roll of the dice may leave him with less in the long run than he hopes. His best payday bet might be to have another great season in San Antonio and hope the limit goes up for free agency 2021.

Keeping things simple for a moment, suppose DeRozan and Poeltl both remain, signing the eleventh draft pick to a rookie contract would leave the Spurs with a full roster.

Here’s if Belinelli and Forbes sign again.

Eliminating one or both of the heavy and defensive 3-point guards allows the Spurs one or two places on the roster.

One of them belongs to Drew Eubanks.

The big man not chosen has already signed two-way contracts with Spurs for the last consecutive seasons. Due to the rules governing two-way contracts, Drew can’t sign a third one.

Eubanks offers much needed height and block in paint at what should be a reasonable $ 1.6 million deal (via spotrac.com). He has worked with Spurs and has an excellent relationship on and off the pitch with his G-League counterparts. The Orlando bubble isn’t the best predictor, but Eubanks has proven to have untapped agility and strength to unleash the big NBA moment.

If Poeltl blows up this pop stall, signing Eubanks is child’s play.

But either way, Eubanks could be a great addition to the Spurs Youth Movement with an affordable contract.
