Edu’s self-imposed transfer challenge as Mikel Arteta tackles Arsenal’s first big headache

Here is Arsenal’s morning recap for Saturday 15 August.

Edu’s self-imposed transfer challenge

Arsenal’s transfer business continued yesterday, with Willian becoming the third man to cross the door this summer following permanent deals for former loanees Cedric Soares and Pablo Mari.

Willian’s arrival comes at a time when the Gunners are under the microscope after the announcement of 55 redundancies, willing to spend to land the Brazilian and move on to tie Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to a new lucrative deal that has been criticized.

Arsenal’s rebuilding under Edu’s leadership is starting at the top and he described Willian’s signing as the first step in a “grand process” that could make or break his term.

“It will take time, but with Willian we have started a great process. We have identified the needs of the squad and it is he who will start to rebalance the squad as we want.”

Arteta’s first big headache

Arsenal have just a few weeks before their new season begins with a return to Wembley to face Premier League winners Liverpool and Mikel Arteta faces his first major headache.

For the most part, Arteta’s starting line-up in his managerial career has largely recovered, with some tweaks and adjustments as needed and great players, such as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, have secured their place.

This was the case with Bernd Leno previously, but his late season injury opened the door for Emiliano Martinez, who took the opportunity with both hands.

The Argentine is eager to continue earning opportunities in the first team and Leno won’t want to lose his spot without a fight, so Arteta has a big decision ahead of him.

Martinez confirms the interest

Staying with Emiliano Martinez, the Argentine spoke directly about his quest to continue earning opportunities in the first team and revealed interest in his services.

Speaking with Marca, the 27-year-old said that ten clubs are interested in joining his services in the current transfer market.

“They are in the sights of 10 teams in Europe. But I can’t say who those clubs are, because it’s nothing concrete. “

“I still don’t have the clear situation with Arsenal, when I have it when I return I’ll make the best decision for my career.”
