Giants plan to sign kicker Graham Gano

The last time the Giants tried their luck with a Scottish-born kicker, he helped them get to their last two Super Bowls.

The Giants are hoping Graham Gano can follow in Lawrence Tynes’ footsteps.

Gano, 33, undergoes the COVID-19 testing protocols required of all free agents and if all goes well and he passes his physical exam, he should sign with the Giants. Gano would join Chandler Catanzaro on the roster, as the Giants look to find a replacement for Aldrick Rosas, their kicker for the past three seasons. Rosas was released after being charged with three hit-and-run offenses in California last month.

Tynes provided the winning points with his right leg in NFC championship games after the 2007 and 2011 seasons. Gano, as Scotland-born Tynes, has an impressive resume. He reached 82.1% of his career field goals (224 of 273) and earned an all-time record share when he drilled a 63-yard field goal on October 7, 2018 to beat the 33 Giants -31.

Why is Gano available? He finished the last two seasons on the reserve injured. A fractured left leg ended his 2018 season prematurely and he underwent knee surgery in 2019, spending the entire season in the reserve injured. This summer, the Panthers went with Joey Slye, releasing Gano on July 30. The physical exam will be essential for Gano to show the Giants that he is in good health.

After parting ways with Rosas, the Giants quickly signed Catanzaro, who retired after leaving the Jets last summer after a difficult preseason. Gano is the most accomplished kicker, successful with Washington and Carolina during his 11-year NFL career. Gano made the Pro Bowl in 2017 after connecting on 34 of 37 field goal attempts. He reached 95.3% of his extra points.

The Giants have given up on Cody Wright. The former Michigan state receiver was signed on Tuesday.
