Washington football team hired Jason Wright as the new team president, making the 38-year-old executive the first black person to hold the position in NFL history.

The team announced hiring on Monday on “Good Morning America”.

Wright, who replaces Bruce Allen, will lead the organization’s business divisions, which include operations, finance, sales and marketing. He’s coming to Washington in the wake of the team’s tumultuous offseason which saw a sexual harassment scandal cloud the program and owner Dan Snyder finally parted ways with the 87-year-old “Redskins” name, the last month.

Wright’s background includes a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Chicago and a psychology degree from Northwestern. His former position was as a partner in a global strategy and management consulting firm, McKinsey & Company.

Wright was a former running back for the Atlanta Falcons, Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals. Throughout his seven-year tenure, Wright had 1,214 rushing and receiving yards combined to go with five touchdowns.

“I’m a football player first and foremost,” Wright said in the GMA interview. “Then I became a businessman and cut my teeth – helping some of the world’s most complex and important organizations transform over the past few years. So for me, it’s personal: an opportunity to help bring my two worlds together in a truly unique way in a truly unique moment. And the fact that I’m black, and that I’m the most qualified person for that, is a boost. “

Allen, the former team president, was with the franchise from 2009 to 2019.
