Football Leaks: Rui Pinto’s hard drive had 488 mailboxes configured

One of the hard drives seized from Rui Pinto, which was decrypted by the creator of Football Leaks and identified by the Judicial Police (PJ) as RP3, had 488 mailboxes configured, said specialist José São Bento.

The afternoon part of the 8th session of the trial, at the Central Criminal Court of Lisbon, was fully occupied by the hearing of the unit of the unit to combat cybercrime and technological crime of the PJ and had a highly technical nature, with the analysis of files and software programs found on the disk that substantiated access to the computer systems of the entities named in the indictment to Rui Pinto.

José São Bento explained that the creator of Football Leaks not only had the credentials, but also the digital certificates needed to bypass the verification mechanisms of the computer systems of some attacked entities, such as the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), the law firm PLMJ, the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), Sporting or the Doyen investment fund.

“We found software installation execution lines that allow us to explore weaknesses and track equipment and network level”, said the Judiciary specialist, who also identified “programs to capture credentials” and “file transfer protocols” in that disc: “We found records of unequivocal access to the FPF and screenshots of the credentials within the PLMJ system”.

According to José São Bento, there were also records of the credential interception processes, mainly by redirecting the information to internet pages similar to those that users were looking for and that, in fact, allowed the collection of access data. For example, in relation to the FPF, a “continuous monitoring” by Rui Pinto was highlighted, which even updated the page when the Federation made changes to the site.

The hearing of the PJ specialist was so technical that, at certain times, the puzzled looks of judges and lawyers were notorious, to which some laughter was added when assistant judge Ana Paula Conceição summed up the limitation of the collective’s computer knowledge of judges: “We are more homicides.”
