The footballers of Liberec won in the final 4th round of the European League at home over APOEL Nicosia thanks to a goal from a penalty kick in the fifth minute setting 1: 0 and for the fifth time in history and for the first time since the 2016/17 season they will play in the cups in the basic group. On the other hand, Plzeň failed for the second time in a row in qualifying, in Israel they lost to Hapoel Beer Ševa 0: 1 after a penalty goal in the fourth minute of the match.
Liberec coach Hoftych used his usual line-up, of which a total of seven players did not play from the beginning in a 0-0 loss in the last league duel with Pardubice.
Former Sheffield striker Wednesday Nuhi, who threatened in the third minute, was also present in the opening eleven of APOEL. After an initial attack from the guests, he got to the shot in the third minute, but Kačaraba blocked it.
After less than a quarter of an hour, Nuhiu finished again and the ball rubbed against the crossbar after his header. The North Bohemians soon leveled the game and tactical fighting prevailed on the lawn in the rest of the first half. More dangerous, however, was the most successful team in Cypriot history and the quarterfinalist of the 2012 Champions League. Just halfway through the opening act, home goalkeeper Nguyen saved, who ran well against Ndongala.
Even more, the Liberec goalkeeper held his team seven minutes after the break, when he caught Nuhiu up close. APOEL, who eliminated Slavia in the final 4th round of the Champions League three years ago, was stronger on the ball, but Slovan resisted due to his fighting spirit. In the 80th minute, the home team demanded a penalty after Kačaraba fell in the lime after Jorge’s intervention.
When it seemed that a cautious match was heading for extra time, the North Bohemians received penalties. Geraldes played the hand of the substitute Rabušice with his hand in the lime, and the Guinean midfielder Mara did not hesitate in the fifth minute.
With a victory over APOEL, the North Bohemians completed a successful performance in the qualification of the European League. In the 2nd preliminary round, they won 5: 1 at the Riteriai Stadium in Lithuania and beat the Romanian FSCB 2: 0 on the field. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the entire cup qualification is played without spectators and, with the exception of the 4th preliminary round of the Champions League, for only one match instead of two.
Liberec will meet the three opponents for the basic group on Friday at the draw in Nyon, Switzerland. Slavia and Sparta will also be in fate.
Pilsen was not entitled to the procedure
On the contrary, Viktoria will be missing again. Hapoel decided the match in Petah Tikva in the fourth minute, when Josué converted a penalty after a foul by Aleš Hruška.
In the Pilsen basic line-up, Buch’s midfielder got a chance instead of Káčera. There was also a stopper and Captain Brabec, who did not finish Sunday’s league match with Brno due to an ankle injury.
The guests did not succeed in the beginning at all. The people of Pilsen were very static and did not work out any greater chance in the first half. Just before the break, Kalvach’s long-range shot was caught by the goalkeeper Levita from a direct kick.
Beer Ševa’s players started better even after a change of sides and were close to the second goal. First, Agudelo hit the bar in the 53rd minute, then Kabh’s shot after another individual penetration was neutralized by Hruška, and the Pilsen goalkeeper then caught Goldberg by running out in time.
In the second act, the West Czechs threatened for the first time after an hour of play, when Kopic headed next to it. The closest equalization was Pilsen in the 67th minute. Buch’s shot was fired by goalkeeper Levita, who then destroyed Čermák’s shot with problems. Acolatse, on the other hand, ran away from the defenders and his ground attempt rubbed against the stick.
In the end, the guests could not create a continuous pressure and, except for Hejd’s inaccurate header, they did not get into greater possibilities. The Czech vice-champions did not follow up on the three-year-old win over Beer Ševa in the European League group during their last participation in the competition.
Willow rejoices in the process
The footballers of the Bulgarian team Ludogorec Razgrad and coach Pavel Vrba advanced to the basic group of the European League thanks to a 1-0 victory over the Belarusian Dynamo Brest.
Vrba won the promotion through the preliminary rounds of the European League for the first time since the 2017/18 season, when he succeeded in his second career in Victoria Pilsen. Ludogorec decided the match in the second half with goals from Elvis Manu and Higini.
The main stage will also be played by PSV Eindhoven, who without the Czech representative Michal Sadílek won 2: 0 over Rosenborg Trondheim. Sadílek was given time off after Sunday’s match, in which he played half of the PSV draw with Heracles. The Croatian Rijeka, which won 1: 0 on the pitch of the Danish vice-champion FC Copenhagen, is celebrating a surprising progress.
