There is still a lot of uncertainty about the organization of the “Rimi Riga Marathon” due to Covid-19

In view of the increase in the prevalence of Covid-19, the Ministry of Health plans to assess whether and how it would be necessary to review the restrictions applicable to the conduct of sporting events.

This weekend, the “Rimi Riga Marathon” will take place in Riga, with 15,000 to 20,000 participants.

Nikele explained that the marathon takes place outside and its organizers have already made a lot of efforts to create it differently than usual, separating the flows of runners. However, the Ministry of Health will invite the organizers of the marathon to a meeting in the near future to assess whether further clarifications are needed in the organization of the event.

“The conversation is still ahead,” the politician stressed.

As reported, the “Rimi Riga Marathon” is one of the few World Athletics Association Gold Label marathons in the world, which will take place this year according to the instructions of epidemiologists.

On October 10 and October 11, all the distances of the “Rimi Riga Marathon” will start in separate “waves” at the Freedom Monument throughout the weekend – Children’s Day distances for the little ones and the 4, 2-kilometer Family Race.

On Saturday, October 10, Children’s Day distances and the Family Race are planned, but on Sunday, October 11 – six-kilometer, ten-kilometer, half marathon and marathon distances.

The Riga Marathon distance will offer one of the rare and last opportunities for athletes to qualify for the 2021 Tokyo Olympics this year.
