The recently deceased Maradona was on site as tournament ambassador for the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships in 2013. After a game by Federer, the Argentine was led through the stadium tunnel, Ferrari said.
There all pictures of the previous tournament winners were placed on the walls. “He stopped at Federer’s picture and kissed it,” reported the photographer, who a little later captured the Swiss man’s meeting with the former football professional in the “Khaleej Times”.
According to Ferrari, Maradona almost burst into tears at the sight of Federer, who came a little later. The compatriot of the football star said: “He hugged and kissed him. Maradona was really in awe of Federer.”
The Argentine was “super excited”, “as if he were a small child meeting his idol”. Maradona died of a heart attack on November 25th at the age of 60.
