Medvedev gets closer to the podium

Winner of the Masters on Sunday, a week after having triumphed in Paris also, Daniil Medvedev (4th) is even closer to Dominic Thiem (3rd) in the ATP ranking updated on Monday and still dominated by Novak Djokovic. And this for a while.

It was time for the season to end for Dominic Thiem. Over the past few weeks, the Austrian has indeed felt Daniil Medvedev’s breath a little more on his back. This Monday, after updating the ATP ranking the day after the Masters won by the man from Moscow, only 655 points separate the two champions. A week after winning the Rolex Paris Masters on which Thiem had preferred to ignore, the Russian, quite proud, inscribed his name on the list of the Masters Tournament for the first time in his young career.

He thus gets a little closer to the one he beat… in the final, Sunday at the O2 Arena in London. Difficult to do better in the standings for the world number 4. The new Tsar of the tennis world has never been in the Top 3. However, at this rate, he could very quickly dislodge his victim from Sunday’s podium. Even if Rafael Nadal maintains a larger lead over the Russian (1380 points behind for Medvedev), the best player of the end of the season indoors should be able to quickly dream of the same way of chasing the Spaniard from second place , especially since he finally beat him, after three defeats in the first three confrontations between the two men.

On March 8, Djokovic will break Federer’s record

In London, the new terror of the circuit has also added Novak Djokovic to his hunting roster. But before thinking of ejecting the Serbian from his throne, we will have to wait. Dominated by Thiem in the semi-finals at the O2 Arena after leading 4-0 in the deciding game of the last set, the world number 1 has failed in his quest for the sixth coronation at the Masters. Nevertheless, he remains untouchable in the standings (12,030 points, against 9,850 against Nadal’s counter). Even a victory for Nadal at the Australian Open in January (if the tournament is maintained) would not allow his runner-up to take power. Monday, Djokovic started his 301st week at the top of the hierarchy. To this day, the record (310 weeks) still belongs to Roger Federer. On March 8, this will no longer be the case.
