Puerto Rico still winless in AmeriCup qualifier

Puerto Rico suffered their third straight loss in qualifying for the AmeriCup 2022 Sunday night during their first second window engagement in Indianapolis.

The Puerto Ricans fell 81-56 against the Mexican team to continue without victories in this qualifier.

The national team will return to the court on Monday at 5:00 pm to face the Bahamas, which fell 99-59 to the United States early in the morning.

Puerto Rico is the only Group D team without a win. The United States is the leader with 3-0, followed by Mexico with 2-1 and the Bahamas with 1-2.

Puerto Rico, under the direction of Eddie Casiano, did not take advantage of a brilliant performance by point guard Iván Gandía in the first half by adding 20 of his 23 points.

The Puerto Ricans only scored eight points in the first period, but came into halftime with a deficit of just three points, 35-32. However, Mexico opened the match at the beginning of the fourth segment.

Emmy Andújar was the only other player from Puerto Rico with double-digit points with 10.

The national team just shot 34% in their field shots (44-15), while committing 21 turnovers. Mexico also beat them 43-20 in rebounds and 23-12 in assists.

Mexico, under the tutelage of Spaniard Paco Olmos, had 18 points from Lucas Martínez and 14 points and eight assists from Paul Stoll.
