UofL football is pausing all team-related activities due to the increase in COVID-19 cases

The University of Louisville is suspending all team-related soccer activities – postponing the game on Saturday in Virginia – due to an increase in COVID-19 cases among players and staff. Prince Tyra, vice president and director of athletics at UofL, announced in a press release on Wednesday that there has been “an increased number of positive COVID-19 tests and accompanying contact tracing activities among the Cardinals’ staff and team members”. Tyra later said during a briefing that just over 20 members of the Cardinals either tested positive or quarantined. Of the players in question, 10 tested positive and five others are in quarantine due to contact with those who tested positive. When it comes to staffing, five support members have tested positive and two more are in quarantine with the coaching team included in the numbers. “We are taking precautions to take a break due to the number of student athletes and staff affected by the virus,” Tyra said. Due to the decision, UofL’s scheduled game on Saturday at Virginia was provisionally postponed to ACCN on November 14th at 3:30 p.m. The teams were able to begin the postponement due to a bye week for both schools. Tyra said he spoke with the Cardinals chief medical officer and ACC and Virginia officials about the decision to postpone the upcoming game, including discussing with them his decision to take a step back into football activities. “It also gives us an opportunity to assess the further spread of the virus. Friday and Sunday test results will determine when we will return to team activities. We appreciate the ACC and Virginia working together at this point,” he said. Tyra said while the number of those affected by COVID-19 is fewer than other programs that have had to cease operations, he wanted to be careful to avoid a significant increase in cases between players or staff.
