Cross-country skiing – Olympic champion Northug has to go to jail – sport

Former Norwegian cross-country skier Petter Northug has been sentenced to seven months in prison by an Oslo court. He also has to surrender his driver’s license forever. The 34-year-old admitted to driving too fast several times and storing drugs. In August, Northug was stopped by the police for driving too fast. Police found six grams of cocaine and 0.6 grams of MDMA in his home during a raid. Initial assumptions that he had driven under the influence of drugs had not been confirmed. In the opinion of the court, it was particularly important that Northug had driven extremely too fast four times, three times faster than 200 kilometers per hour in an 80 zone. In doing so, he put his life and the lives of others in danger. The fact that he filmed himself doing it and sent these films to his friends could incite others to do similar things, the judge said. Northug had previously admitted that he had one hand on the steering wheel during these trips and filmed with the right hand on the cell phone.
