Bouwmeester will not return to hockey after last year’s heart attack

Bouwmeester collapsed last year on February 11 in the 13th minute of his St. Louis on the ice of Anaheim and doctors had to use a defibrillator to restore his heart. He was then taken to hospital, where doctors later operated on a cardioverter-defibrillator in his chest to monitor his heart rhythm.

“A lot of time has passed since then, but it feels like yesterday. To be honest, I already knew then that I was basically done. And yes, that’s right, “said Bouwmeester.

The Olympic champion (2014) and two-time world champion (2003 and 2004) has served in the NHL for seventeen seasons. After winning the Stanley Cup in 2019 as the 29th player and so far the last to enter the prestigious Triple Gold Club. At one time he was the iron man of the competition, when between 2005-2012 he did not miss a single match of the basic part. In Florida, Calgary and St. Louis played 1240 matches in the basic part, in which he scored 88 goals and 336 assists. He recorded another 75 starts and 13 final passes in the playoffs.
