Derby

Wayne Rooney decided to hang up his boots from football. He is now officially the permanent manager of Derby County.

Rooney, 35, has previously handled Derby since November 2020, replacing the sacked Phillip Cocu. It’s just that, his status at that time was still a player-coach.

But since that appointment, Rooney has never included his own name in the squad list. On January 15, 2021, Rooney decided to focus on a managerial career.

He will try to bring Derby to stay in the Championship division, the second caste of the Premier League. Currently, Derby is in the relegation zone, ranks 22nd out of 24 teams, and has only collected 19 points from 22 matches.

“When I returned to England (after defending DC United in the United States), I was in awe of the potential of the Derby. The stadium, training facilities, the quality of the coaching staff and its young players, and of course the loyal supporters,” said Rooney. Guardian.

“To be given the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of (past Derby managers) Brian Clough, Jim Smith, Frank Lampard and Phillip Cocu is an honor.”

“I promise everyone at the club, to my fans and to my staff that I will try my best to maximize the potential that I have seen over the past year here,” said Rooney.

Born in Liverpoool, Rooney started his career in the city with Everton in 2002.Two years later, Manchester United signed him and he remained there until 2017.

After returning to Everton for a season, in 2018 he moved to DC United and then returned to England in January 2020, defended Derby County and finally retired there.

During his career, Rooney won many trophies, including 5 Premier League titles, 1 FA Cup, 3 English League Cups, 1 Champions League and 1 Europa League. Everything is obtained with MU.

Meanwhile, with the England national team, Rooney appeared 120 times and scored 53 goals during the 2003-2018 period. Unfortunately, he did not have a title that he contributed to The Three Lions, even though he is still at the top of the list of top scorers.
