Why did Liverpool buy a “Second Class” defender, Juergen Klopp? All pages

KOMPAS.com – Juergen Klopp said Liverpool usually wouldn’t look to players from second-tier teams, such as Preston North End. However, it’s a different story with Ben Davies.

Liverpool finally got a new defender in the winter transfer window of 2021. They officially recruited Ben Davies on Monday (1/2/2021) or Tuesday morning WIB.

Not Tottenham Hotspur’s Ben Davies. This Davies comes from Preston North End, the Premier League’s second caste team, Championship.

The Reds have to spend 1.6 million pounds (around Rp. 30.7 billion) to make up for the 25-year-old defender.

Recruitment Davies is the answer from Liverpool to overcome the crisis in their back line.

As is known, the Red Defense is being hit by a storm of injuries. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez lay in the treatment room.

Followed by Joel Matip, who received an ankle injury during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Tottenham in Week 20 of the Premier League.

Fabinho, who is usually installed as a central defender, has also recently been experiencing fitness problems.

As long as the senior defenders were injured, Liverpool used their captain, Jordan Henderson, to play at the heart of the defense.

So, the purchase of Davies can patch up Liverpool’s defensive line, which is in hole, at least until the 2020-2021 season ends.

But why Ben Davies? He’s just a “second class” defender with no experience in the Premier League whatsoever.

Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said that Liverpool do not usually look to players from second caste teams.

However, Davies’ transfer was different. Klopp can see the potential of the defender who has made 145 appearances for Preston.

“We saw his quality and we also saw his potential because he is 25 years old and a lot will come for him,” said Klopp, as quoted from Goal.

“What I like about Ben is that every situation creates opportunities,” said the German coach.

“I really like his game. He is a very good footballer, looks like the right leader in the Preston team,” added Klopp.

Klopp also knows Davies has no Premier League experience, but he and the Liverpool coaching staff are ready to help.

“I’m sure he still wants to learn. We are ready to teach, to train. I am really looking forward to meeting him,” said Klopp ending.
