Serena Williams’ Wimbledon campaign ended after six games of the first round match against Belarusian Sasnovičová. The sixth player came to the central court with a heavily bandaged right thigh, which indicated that she was not in the best shape.

Nevertheless, in the first set she took the lead 3: 1 and served to confirm the break. But at 15:15 she slipped in the back of the court, and that was fatal for her. She finished the game, but lost the serve. She then sought the help of a physiotherapist and a medical timeout.

She still returned to the match, but her game was no longer 100%. Sasnovičová kept the serve and equalized to 3: 3. Williams wanted to fight, but the pain was unbearable. During the seventh game, she collapsed at the baseline and it was clear to everyone that the tournament was over for the star.

To the deafening applause of the audience, she left the court in tears. “It broke my heart that I had to resign. It was because of a right leg injury, “she wrote on social media.” My love and gratitude belong to the fans and the team, which makes participating in the central court so important and exceptional, “she continued.

“I felt tremendous warmth and support from the audience when I came to the court and then left it,” she added, adding that it meant everything to her in the world at the time.
