Friday 23 July – therefore in less than a month – it Tokyo National Stadium will host the opening ceremony of the 32a Olympics of the modern era, an edition already historic in itself since it is the first to be postponed by a year (obviously due to the pandemic).

A heterogeneous group which has grown increasingly large and is still waiting to fully define its composition since the commitments of these days could modify (and expand) the calls. Let’s see the situation in detail.

WITH THE OLYMPIC CARD IN HAND
Some of the “Olympians” already have a “strictly personal” invitation in their hands to fly to Tokyo: these are the individual Olympic cards won in the various qualifying trials which vary according to the discipline and federation to which they belong. In this group are the swimmer of Azzate Nicolò Martinenghi (100 breaststroke and probable mixed relay), the gymnast from Busto Arsizio Ludovico Edalli (general competition), the weightlifter of Arsago Seprio Giorgia Bordignon (category up to 64 kg) and the torso of shooting Riccardo Mazzetti (automatic pistol). In the latter sport we also have the legnanese Nicolo Frame, in the 3-position rifle. Apart from Martinenghi, who is making his debut, the others all have an Olympic experience behind them with De Nicolo who will be in Tokyo for the fifth time.

THE ALMOST SAFE
In sports in which the national team is qualified, but not the individual, the convocations are issued by selectors and technical commissioners so the certainty comes only when the teams are made official. However, some athletes are almost certain to wear blue in the Japanese capital: this is the case with Federica Cesarini from Bardello and of Chiara Ondoli from Angera, destined to compete on the “women’s doubles” of rowing (the first in light weights, the second among seniors).
Same fate for Caterina Bosetti, the second of the blue sisters of Albizzate, a permanent presence in the national team of coach Davide Mazzanti: the spiker is considered a holder of the sextet of Italy.
Finally we feel like joining this group also Vittoria Fontana: the sprinter from Gallarate did not obtain the “minimum” to be admitted by right to the Olympic 100 meters but contributed to the qualification of the 4 × 100 relay and he should also be part of this team in Tokyo.

IN SEARCH OF THE CONVOCATION

We try it starting from two international stars who wear as many red and white shirts: first of all Luis Scola, star of Argentina and Openjobmetis, former Olympic gold medalist in 2002, at the fifth Olympic Games in basketball.
