Mohamed Flissi and Amel Melih flag bearers of the Algerian delegation

ALGIERS- Boxer Mohamed Flissi and swimmer Amel Melih will be the flag bearers of the Algerian delegation during the opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games (July 23 – August 8), APS learned on Tuesday from of the Algerian Olympic and Sports Committee (COA).

For the first time it is therefore not one but two flag bearers, a man and a woman, who will represent the Algerian delegation, a possibility offered by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

The Vice-President of the COA and President of the Algerian Athletics Federation, Yacine Louail, also indicated that weightlifter Walid Bidani and sprinter Loubna Benhadja will take over during the closing ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics.

Flissi (31 years old) will take part in his third Olympiad after those of Rio de Janeiro in 2016 and London 2012, while Melih (27 years old) will participate for the 1st time in the Olympic games.

Flissi and Melih will succeed judokate Sonia Asselah who was Algeria’s flag bearer at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

As a reminder, Forty-four (44) athletes from fourteen (14) disciplines will represent Algeria at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. These are athletics (8 athletes), boxing (8), wrestling (8), fencing (4), swimming (3), rowing (2), cycling (2) , judo (2) and sailing (2), canoeing (1 athlete), weightlifting (1), karate (1), table tennis (1) and sport shooting (1).
