Olympics, tennis. Hot emergency: Badosa illness. Medvedev protests “I die”

The Spaniard also forced to withdraw from the mixed doubles tournament. The Russian asked for a doctor’s intervention twice. Matches delayed from Thursday

Another illness at the Ariake Tennis Park in Tokyo. After the alarm raised by Medvedev in recent days and the fainting of a volunteer, today it was the Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa who fell victim to an illness: she left the field in a wheelchair after retiring from the quarter-final match against Marketa Vondrousova due to heat stroke. La Badosa also had to retire from the mixed doubles with partner Pablo Carreno Busta. And the organizers have now decided to delay matches starting Thursday to try to protect players from extreme heat and humidity.

The protests

During the round of 16 match against Fabio Fognini it was Daniil Medvedev who protested about the conditions of the game. He asked twice for the physiotherapist’s intervention and when the chair judge, Carlos Ramos, asked him if he could continue playing, he replied: “I can finish the game but I can die, if I die, will you be responsible?”. Medvedev said he saw everything black at one point. “I didn’t know what to do to feel better,” added the Russian player. “I was prepared to pass out on the pitch,” admitted Medvedev.
