Dominated in four rounds by Pedro Martinez, Gaël Monfils saw his journey at Wimbledon end in the second round. Dominated by Ilya Ivashka, Jérémy Chardy is also leaving the London turf. Richard Gasquet, for his part, fell to Roger Federer. Last chance Habs, Benjamin Bonzi failed against Marin Cilic.

After the retirement of Adrian Mannarino, Roger Federer has once again put an end to the career of a French player. Richard Gasquet fought well but had to admit defeat against the eight-time winner on the grass of Wimbledon. From the first game, the Swiss had an opportunity to take the service of the Biterrois but the latter reacted before, in turn, having three break points. Nevertheless, the two players held their face-offs to explain the decisive game. A tiebreak that turned out to be one-sided, Richard Gasquet only managing to win one point. Roger Federer then imposed his game on Center Court, saving a break point before winning five consecutive games to easily win the second set in less than half an hour. Back to the wall, Richard Gasquet reacted and did not concede his serve so easily. But, after missing an opportunity, Roger Federer made the difference in the seventh game. Managing to save a first match point on his serve, the Biterrois only delayed the deadline because it is on a game service well conducted that the Balois validated his qualification (7-6, 6-1, 6-4 in 1h54 ‘) to join Cameron Norrie in the third round.

Monfils did not do better than Svitolina

A few hours after Elina Svitolina, Gaël Monfils also left Wimbledon. Seed number 13 in the third round of the Grand Slam, the Habs failed against the Spaniard Pedro Martinez in four rounds and more than three hours of fighting, he who came out of a victory in five rounds over three days against Christopher O’Connell. With the entry break, the 17th in the world has moved in the direction of the market but the 107th in the ATP standings has been able to react and line up five consecutive games to fly to the win of the first round. Gaël Monfils had two opportunities to take the advantage in the second set but Pedro Martinez did not let anything go before breaking the Frenchman. Missing a first set point on the Frenchman’s engagement, the Spaniard added more weight to his faceoff. Back to the wall, Gaël Monfils tightened the game and did not let the slightest flaw be exploited by Pedro Martinez. Better yet, the Frenchman struck as soon as he had the chance and, for that, he had to be patient. It was only in the tenth game, on his first break point, that the Parisian took the service of the Spaniard to win the third set. The two players had break points in the middle of the fourth set but it was in the home stretch that Pedro Martinez went to seek the service of Gaël Monfils to serve to win the match. But the Habs, after dismissing a match point, managed to snatch a decisive game. However, the Spaniard raced ahead to seal the fate of the match at his second chance (6-3, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 in 3h12 ‘) and join Cristian Garin in the third round.

Chardy not better off

Like Gaël Monfils, Jérémy Chardy saw his journey at Wimbledon end on Thursday in the second round. The 61st world has not confirmed his success against Aslan Karatsev for his entry into the running when facing Ilya Ivashka. More enterprising from the start, the Frenchman first missed two break opportunities before achieving his ends in the fifth game. Resisting his opponent by dismissing four break balls, Jérémy Chardy took the first advantage by winning the first set. But the Belarusian has been able to be opportunistic. While the two players were imperial in the second set, Ilya Ivashka seized his only chance to take the service of the Habs. In the process, with his first set point, the 79th player in the world tied with one set throughout this meeting. Unable to put his opponent in difficulty in the third round, with no break point to his credit, Jérémy Chardy saw his opponent retain the 100% success seen in the second. Indeed, in the third and seventh games, Ilya Ivashka took the service of the French to confirm the inflection of this meeting. A single break, in the fifth game, was enough for the Belarusian to make a definite difference in this match. On a final shutout, Ilya Ivashka validated his ticket for the third round of Wimbledon (4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in 2h26 ‘) and joined Jordan Thompson, defender of Kei Nishikori (7- 5, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in 3h08 ‘).
Bonzi leans over Cilic
If the Blues have already deserted the Wimbledon courts in the women’s singles, it is now the same for the Blues in the men’s singles. Indeed, the last French chance in this table, Benjamin Bonzi, fell in four sets against Marin Cilic. The Croatian, seeded number 32 in the tournament, started the match better with a break point and then three more in the fifth game. But the Habs were able to find the resources to rule them all out. But, with four games everywhere, the 119th world gave way and allowed his opponent to conclude the first set in the wake of his faceoff. However, Benjamin Bonzi, after having been put in difficulty in the service, was able to respond. A streak of three consecutive breaks allowed him to take the lead in the second set, ultimately won by a shutout. The response of the 37th World was immediate. Marin Cilic won the first three games of the third round, a break ahead that was never endangered by a Benjamin Bonzi unable to get a break point. The Croatian, with this advantage in the score, could have made life easier with two opportunities to take the service at the start of the fourth set but it was ultimately in the decisive game that the two players were decided. Led five points to one, Benjamin Bonzi was able to come back to a length but without taking the extra step. On his second match point, Marin Cilic put an end to the French course at Wimbledon (6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 in 3:06 ‘) and joined Daniil Medvedev in the third round.
