For the 4th place duo Edgars Točs and Mārtiņš Pļaviņš, who won 4th place at the Tokyo Olympics, the last fights in Japan were already emotionally difficult due to their mutual relations, but the cooperation of the two beach volleyball players will continue in some respects after the decision. Toch compared the situation at the end of the Tokyo Games to the marital crisis and emphasized that it was better to say goodbye to each other before the relationship became very strained.
At the end of the Olympic Games, after the last match at the team meeting, Mārtiņš offered to end the duo’s cooperation, which Edgars agreed to. In the last games in Tokyo, it was already felt that the situation is emotionally tense and both participants of the duo are angry at each other, Točs told Latvian Television in the “Morning Panorama” on Thursday.
“Such a marital crisis, so to speak,” Toch explained. “Every co-operation on the pitch is like a marriage, and if you feel that there are problems emotionally, every change is for the better. It’s better to part ways like this than that after a year or two really with poison and cemmi. You need to know when to put an end. “
Toch stressed that divorce is not always bad news, as it is a little more positive.
Of course, there is also uncertainty about the future, but Toč described the new challenge as a good thing. Cooperation with Pļaviņš has not been given an absolute point either, as both will have joint sparring trainings and cooperation in separate projects.
In Toča’s opinion, the next step in the continuation of his career will be difficult for both of them, because currently there are not many good beach volleyball players in Latvia to attract in pairs. Both Točs and Pļaviņš will continue to fight for the Paris Olympics, building cooperation with other partners and trying to involve young people more in training.
Pļaviņš and Točs spent the first full season together in 2018, and Edgars called the cooperation started at that time a very good restart, because both written off before the first results. Toc will remember the work he has done together, gaining good success in high-level tournaments, as well as big drops and rises in results, the duo being able to beat every opponent and lose.
Toc will try to take the accumulated experience and emotion with him to the next challenges, because the 4th place in the Olympic Games has provided another opportunity to prove himself. Toči and Pļaviņas are waiting for another important joint start in the beginning of October in the final stage of the World Tour.
