Tokyo 2020 | Spain surpasses the Rio medals in Tokyo




Three days after the end of the Tokyo Paralympic Games, Spain has already done its homework. The two bronzes conquered by Sarai Gascón and Marta Fernández this Thursday in swimming, plus the one achieved by Héctor Carrera in javelin throw, lead the national delegation to add 33 Paralympic metals, surpassing the medal table of the Rio 2016 Games, which closed with 31 medals.

The Spanish team adds nine golds, thirteen silvers and eleven bronzes. The swimming and athletics they repeat as the two disciplines that lead the medal table. Spain has done the same in Tokyo -and once again- in the pool, conquering up to 14 Paralympic metals; it is followed, by far, the Athletics, with seven medals; road cycling and triathlon are the disciplines matched with four medals each; the track cycling stands with two medals and the judo and table tennis, both with one.

In Brazil, the delegation also took nine golds, one more silver (14 silver) and eight bronzes in six sports: swimming, athletics, wheelchair basketball, cycling, table tennis and triathlon. Some figures that led Spain to lead the eleventh place of the Paralympic historical medal table, with 651 medals.

Swimming and athletics, star sports for Spain

In Tokyo 2020, the swimming has been the star sport with Marta Fernandez as the undisputed leader of the delegation. The swimmer who makes her debut in these Games takes home a medal of each color and, for a sweeter triumph, she has had great companions who have defended the Spanish throne with claws: Toni Ponce, Nuria Marqués and Sarai Gascón They are multi-medalists, with two Paralympic medals each in Tokyo. Iñigo Llopis, Michelle Alonso, Óscar Salguero, Miguel Luque and Teresa Perales they have each obtained a medal.

Brazil had Teresa Perales as the leader of the delegation. The Aragonese swimmer climbed on several occasions to the podium and her companions Sarai Gascón, Nuria Marqués, Michelle Alonso, María Delgado and Israel Oliver they also became multi-medalists. Óscar Salguero, Miguel Luque and Ariadna Edo a gold, a silver and a bronze were brought home respectively.

The second successful sport in Tokyo has been Athletics, discipline with seven medals that has been bathed in gold. Kim López, Yassine Ouhdadi, Gerard Download and Adi Iglesias they have won, in their respective categories, the heaviest medal. Sara Martínez and Miriam Martínez gave Spain two silver, while Hector Cabrera the bronze has been hung.

In Rio 2016, Kim López, Gerard Descarega and Elena Congost contributed three golds to the medal table. The silver arrived with the names of Abderrahman Ait and Alberto Suárez. David Casinos and Izaskun Osés took the bronzes.

Road cycling and triathlon, equal to four

Not only swimming and athletics have brought great joy to Spain in Tokyo. The road cycling, with the debut of Sergio Garrote and his two medals, and the bronzes of Luismi Marquina and the duo of Christian Venge-Noel Martín, has also been the protagonist.

In triathlon, Susana Rodríguez it has been made of gold and Héctor Catalá has bathed in silver, while Alejandro Sánchez and Eva Moral closed their podiums with the bronzes conquered in Tokyo. In Rio, it was Jairo Ruiz who hung the bronze medal in the premiere of this sport in the Paralympic Games.

Traveling back to the past, Spanish cycling also stood out in Brazil with the tandem formed by Ignacio Ávila and Joan Font.

In track cycling, Tokyo has lived a deja breast. Alfonso Cabello repeats getting on the podium (in Tokyo, with gold and in Brazil, with bronze) and so does the Spanish team.

Judo and table tennis

Judo and table tennis are the other disciplines that have triumphed in Tokyo with a medal each. The judoka Sergio Ibáñez has added a silver to the medal table and the national men’s team, the bronze.
