UCAM makes history in Tokyo: 22 medalists and 31 diplomas

Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games finished, it is time to analyze and do count of what was achieved in a competition that has once again become the epicenter of world sport.

The athletes that are part of the alliance between the Spanish Olympic Committee and the Catholic University of Murcia, promoted by its presidents Alejandro Blanco and José Luis Mendoza, they have reaped magnificent results, since twenty-two of them have achieved a medal and thirty-one have returned with a diploma. A fact that has once again allowed the UCAM, to be the university in the world with the most Olympic and Paralympic athletes in these recent Olympic Games.

At the Paralympic Games, which have just finished, have been five medalists: Susana rodriguez (gold in triathlon), Gerard Download and William Red (gold in 400 meters) and the swimmers You will be Gascón (silver and bronze) and Teresa Perales (the payment).

Previously, the olympians they had also obtained magnificent results. Three of them returned from Tokyo with the gold: Alberto Fernández and Fátima Gálvez (Olympic shot) and Sandra Sanchez (karate). The biggest crop of medals came in the form of silver: Saúl Craviotto, Marcus Cooper Walz, Rodrigo Germade, Carlos Arévalo and Teresa Portela (canoeing); Maialen Chourraut (canoeing in slalom); Damien Quintero (karate); Adriana Cerezo (taekwondo); Ray Zapata (gymnastics); and Maica García and Irene González (water polo). And with the bronze, three of the “Hispanics” of the handball team returned from Tokyo: Gideón Guardiola, Ángel Fernández and Eduardo Gurbindo.

Once again, UCAM is among the universities in the world with the best results in some Games and already look towards Paris 2024 with the aim of continuing to support athletes and Spaniards and help them achieve their sporting dreams and academic goals.

The Spanish team goes beyond the athletes and among the technicians and doctors of the delegation there was also a important representation of the UCAM. Juan Francisco Abellán, Professor of the Degree in Medicine at this university, repeated as doctor of the Women’s Basketball Team, Jose Antonio Carrillo, president and coach of UCAM Athleo Cieza, was part of the technical team of the Athletics Federation, Jesus del Moral He is coach of the Karate National Team and Silvia Erdelyi, from UCAM Cartagena TM, from the Table Tennis Selection.

At the Paralympics. the Dr. Tomás Fernández, professor of Master of Sports Traumatology from UCAM, he was the medical chief of the Spanish delegation and the Dr. Patricia Núñez, a student of the same master’s degree, was with the men’s wheelchair basketball team.
