Mets leaders: at least six men have reportedly left the process

When the Mets decided they wanted a president of baseball operations, their three nominees were Billy Beane, Theo Epstein and David Stearns. The three have asked to have their names removed from the process.

Then, the Mets changed their minds: they were ready to take a younger one, but as GM. And so far, the results are inconclusive.

Matt Arnold, GM of the Brewers (and who works for David Stearns), was considered. A native of New York, the Mets were confident they could draw him to town.

But ultimately the guy doesn’t want to go, the Brewers don’t want to let him go and he’s about to sign a contract extension at Milwaukee.

Fifth candidate? Scott Harris. The San Francisco Giants GM was also reportedly approached for a job with the New York Mets.

But he too said no.

And finally, we must add the name of Michael Girsch. The GM of the Saint-Louis Cardinals was also reportedly approached by the New York Mets.

And guess what? He too would have said no to the formation of the New York Mets.

So that means there are six guys who (as far as we know) said no to the Mets. And there may be others, who knows?

If we want to add more, from what we know publicly, no one has gone to the next level to negotiate with the Mets a few days before the most important offseason in recent years with the Mets for a while.

Does that mean nobody wants the job? Not necessarily, no. It means that famous names have refused and it can also mean that the Steve Cohen / Sandy Alderson duo may scare some people. It is not a good sign, but it is not a disaster.

Still, it’s important to mention that there are still several people in the race to become GM and there is even a candidate to become president of baseball operations. We just don’t know their identity.

In the meantime, Sandy Alderson makes the decisions. It was he who extended the contract of the pitching coach, who had an option in his contract.

But it’s time for the Mets to find their man so he can hire a manager and build the 2022 squad.

  • Collective agreement: negotiations take place.
  • Josh Donaldson hasn’t forgotten Toronto.
