“My dream is that every player can make a living from football”

Tessa Wullaert, captain of the Red Flames, is about to experience a very important week with the national women’s team. Indeed, Belgium faces Kosovo and Norway with a view to qualifying for the next World Cup which will take place in Australia and New Zealand in 2023. On Monday, the Anderlecht player answered questions from our consultants from La Tribune.

For 3-4 years, we have grown well. The players, the staff,… we have all improved but we are not yet at the level of Norway. We want to be in the top 8 in Europe. It will be difficult because the other teams are professional. We still have a lot of work ahead of us“, explains the Anderlecht player.

Today, there are almost 50,000 girls playing football in Belgium: “I find it super cool. I speak with a lot of parents who tell me that their daughter wants to start playing. Women’s football is starting to live on and it’s good for the future“.

If there are more and more players in Belgium, Tessa Wullaert would like every girl playing in the Super League (Women’s Division 1) to have a professional contract: “I am the only professional in Belgium. My dream is that every girl can make a living from football. This is how we will progress“.

The level of demand has been rising in Belgium in recent years and some players are paying the price, such as Justien Odors, the guardian of Sporting d’Anderlecht. “Girls are asked to live like professionals when they are not paid like professionals. We must support the players“, concludes our consultant Cécile De Gernier.
