Sevastova, despite back problems, wins the first round of the Indian Wells tournament

Sevastov, who ranks 65th in the WTA, beat the Slovenian Polon Duke of the 123rd racket in the world with 3-6, 6-2, 6-0.

In the first set, the first break ball was fixed in the fifth game, the Duke using it and achieving 3-2 in his favor.

In Seto’s longest seventh game, the Slovene had three breakballs, but none of them were used.

Finally, in the ninth game, the Duke, who never gave Sevastova a break in the set, realized the fourth of the set balls – 6-3.

In the second set, the picture was completely opposite, dominating Sevastova with shortened beats.

She was the only one to have four breakballs, winning “dry” with the first third game, but using the third of three consecutive breakballs in the fifth game and winning the set with 6-2.

After the second set, the Latvian tennis player took a medical break, during which Sevastova’s back was taken care of.

The Slovenian started the third set with several mistakes, serving himself, helping Sevastova to win the first game. The Latvian tennis player reached 2-0 with a walk to the net, starting the third game well (30: 0). The dominance was lost, but with a double mistake, the Slovene lost his game – 3: 0 in favor of Sevastova.

We also managed to win the fourth game by serving it myself. The decisive point in the long game was scored with a walk to the net – 4-0.

With another shot in the net, the Duke allowed Sevastova to serve for the victory in the game – 5-0 in favor of the Latvian tennis player.

In the sixth game, the Latvian athlete won two match balls in a row and, although the first serve did not give up, in an interesting game, went to the net after the Slovenian shortened shot, achieved success in the second match game – 6-0.

The Duke served better, scoring three elusive serves against Sevastova once and making double mistakes against the opponent’s six. She also performed the first service more accurately, hitting the field in 76.3% of cases, while Sevastova only 56.6 percent.

However, in other indicators, the Latvian tennis player was better, who scored five of the eight break-ups, while the opponent did it twice in eight attempts.

In total, Sevastova won 80 of 142 games.

With this victory, Sevastova ended a series of six losses.

Entering the second round will give a Latvian tennis player 35 world ranking points.

In the four games so far, all of which ended in no more than two sets, Sevastova was three times superior. In 2011, she won the Duke twice – in the first round of the Australian Open and in the Indian Wells tournament, but in the semi-finals of the 2018 Bucharest tournament, the Slovene was unable to continue playing after the first set. The Duke’s victory was celebrated for the only time in the first meeting, being superior to the quarterfinals of the ITF “W-100” series Cuneo tournament in Italy.

The last tennis players had the last fight in the first round of the US Open Championship, Sevastova with 6-7 (6: 8), 3-6 conceding from the Czech Katerina Sinjakova, and the Duke with 1-6, 2-6 – with the Czech Petra Kvitova.

Sevastova and the Duke of New York had joined forces in a doubles match, conceding in the first round to the Romanian duo.

Sevastova had gone to Indianwels with a series of six losses.

At the Wimbledon Championships, Sevastova reached the third round, but lost the first round at the Tokyo Olympics. The best result for her this season is in the tournament in Miami, where the Latvian tennis player won three victories and reached the quarterfinals.

The most successful this season in the WTA tour is the Duke of Rome “WTA 1000” series tournament and the French Open, where the Slovenian reached the third round. She also won an Oeiras ITF W-60 Series tournament in Portugal in April.

The balance of the Sevastov season is 21-19, while that of the Duke is 11-18.

In 2020, the Indian Wells tournament was not held due to Covid-19, in 2019 Sevastova reached the third round, unable to continue the fight against the Estonian Aneti Kontaveit, but the most successful Latvian tennis player in this competition was 2018, when the American Venus Williams lost in the eighth final. In total, Sevastova has played five times in Indian Wells so far.

The Slovenian had played three times in Indian Wells. Her best achievement was in 2015, when after overcoming two qualifying rounds, she reached the second round of the tournament.

Sevastova has so far won four and the Duke three WTA singles tournaments.

In the second round, the winner of this duel will meet Ons Žaberas from Tunisia, who ranks 14th in the world and is numbered 12th in the tournament, receiving an exemption from the first round matches.

Latvia’s first racket Alona Ostapenko, who ranks 29th in the WTA rank and is numbered 24 in this tournament, will not play in the first round.

In the second round, her opponent will be Taiwanese Suvei Xie, who ranks 96th.

In the 2019 tournament, Bianka Andres won from Canada.

The first Latvian racket Ernests Gulbis stopped in the first round of the men’s qualifying tournament.

The tournament in Indian Wells takes place on a hard surface.
