Sumo, the national sport of Japan

Sumo is a combat sport in which two wrestlers (the rikishi) face each other on the ground with the aim of throwing their rival out of the circular area marked with a rope.

This sport is considered an art in Japan and maintains ancient Shinto customs and traditions. It is a sport in which, professionally, only men compete.

While women’s tournaments are considered amateur and there have recently been movements to professionalize it, the Japan Sumo Association is conservative about changing the rules.
