First cross duel Mathieu van der Poel with Wout van Aert possibly only after Christmas | Cycling

After a rest period of three and a half weeks, Van der Poel has been training for a good week. Because it has been a long time since he took such a long period without the bike, his Alpecin-Fenix team wants to build up slowly and the world champion cyclo-cross will ride a limited program with 10 to 12 races. This is because a busy road season awaits and it is intended that he will finish the Tour de France next summer.

Last year Van der Poel drove fifteen crosses and started on December 12. This year it will be a week later. Van der Poel wants to lay a solid foundation in November and from 1 to 10 December he will travel to Spain with Alpecin-Fenix on a team internship. Afterwards, the Dutchman will be race ready, but the World Cup race in the Italian Val Di Sole on December 12 may be just too early. The next big cross appointment is the World Cup race in Rucphen on December 18th.

We’ll have to wait even longer for a first battle between the big three, it seems. Possibly even after Christmas. Pidcock and Van Aert are both planning their cyclocross comeback at the beginning of December. Only Van Aert also goes on a team internship in December. Jumbo-Visma’s troops will gather from 13 to 21 December, so that Van Aert and Van der Poel would avoid each other until after Christmas.
