Darts World Cup: Gabriel Clemens without problems against the harmless “Prince of Wales”

DGabriel Clemens had lost the only comparison so far. On the ProTour there was a defeat against the 19-year-old Lewis Williams. The talent from Wales beat some top players in his first year as a professional. Clemens was warned.

Caution, which quickly turned out to be a false positive. The German number one won in the end 3: 1, 3: 1 and 3: 1 and moved into the third round with a 3: 0 after sets. With the success, the Saarland native jumped to 19th place in the live ranking. After the tournament, he could become the first German top 20 player in history.

Gabriel Clemens punished consistently

Williams started quickly, but gave five darts on the doubles, so that Clemens thanked the break on the double-12 and then pulled through to 3-0. An average of 88 points was enough to keep the Welshman at a distance.

He got his first leg at the beginning of the second set. Clemens didn’t score well, hardly hit a triple and was visibly dissatisfied, but equalized with a 143 checkout and shortly afterwards pushed himself with the first two 180s. Williams checked the bullseye to make it 2-2, but missed a set dart on double-20. Clemens acknowledged with the double 10 to win the set. The body language was correct, as was the double quota of 85.7 percent, only the scoring was still a bit lame at 88.22.

The “German Giant” could still rely on the mistakes of his disappointing opponent. Williams also threw five darts past the doubles at the start of round three. The Welshman was now at a rate of 11.8 percent, only hit two of his 17 check darts.

After the Englishman Ryan Meikle had thrown Fabian Schmutzler 3-0 out of the tournament on the second day of the tournament, the second British hairdresser did no damage to the German darts.

Williams got his third leg overall, but shortly afterwards Clemens checked to make another 3-1 over the double-18. A solid win for Gaga, who will face the next Welshman on Monday (from 8 p.m., live on Sport1 and DAZN): title candidate Jonny Clayton.

December 27th will be the German day at the Darts World Championship. In addition to Clemens, Florian Hempel is required in the afternoon. The surprise winner against Dimitri van den Bergh wants to move into the round of 16 with a victory over Australian Raymond Smith.

Until then, Clemens and Hempel will spend the holidays in the players’ hotel with their partners. Not the most romantic Christmas. An already secure prize money of 25,000 pounds each and the prospect of the round of the last 16 should counteract a warehouse frenzy.
