De Telegraaf: Overmars felt financially undervalued at Ajax

Marc Overmars has seriously considered leaving Ajax for Newcastle United. De Telegraaf reports this in a reconstruction on Wednesday. He felt ‘undervalued’, but was persuaded to stay in Amsterdam after ‘penetrating talks’ with the supervisory board.

Newcastle signed up for Overmars in October. The question: whether he wanted to set the technical lines at the immensely wealthy Premier League club, which had just been acquired by Saudi State’s Public Investment Fund. It caused ‘blind panic’ at Ajax, according to De Telegraaf.

“The supervisory board feared that the club would be technically beheaded, because the director of football affairs was interested in a switch and his contract stated a notice period of only three months,” writes the morning newspaper.

On the day of Ajax-PSV (5-0) Overmars had to report to the supervisory board. The director admitted that he had some feelings for a switch to Newcastle, also because he felt financially undervalued. All in all, Overmars, who has also been approached by FC Barcelona, Arsenal and Manchester United, earned almost seven tons gross in the Johan Cruijff Arena.

Overmars eventually called Newcastle off after Ajax’s commissioners allegedly ‘begged him to stay’ in a second penetrating conversation. Overmars’ financial wishes were largely granted. Overmars’ contract extension until 2026 was leaked on Tuesday.
