Red Revolution: L’Spar sweeps Zaragoza 90-53

Spar has won the Casademont Zaragoza (90-53) in a match that has had great attractions, such as the duel of bases Laia Palau-Anna Cruz, or the debut of Michaela Onyewere, who has hit his first dots dressed in red.

Girona have entered the game a bit slow. Those from Zaragoza, led by a successful Vega Gimeno (12 points in the 1st quarter), have led the initiative for much of the initial stretch. Alfred Julbe’s men, however, were quick to equalize and thanks to a great choral game led by a good defense, they reversed the situation to an 8-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Fans have been able to celebrate the first points (18) of the long-awaited debutant, the young Michaela Onyewere, “rookie” of the year in the WNBA and called to be one of the most prominent figures in the sport.

In the second quarter, Girona went down a notch. The Spar has gone through a phase of nebula with little success in shooting, probably the result of accumulated fatigue and lack of rotation. Zaragoza, with great figures such as Anna Cruz, Vega Gimeno and the American Calhoun, did not take advantage of their opportunities (10/27 in field goals) and Girona have reappeared with a great choral basketball (all players have left at the break having scored) and with an upward defensive line (21 rebounds and 4 rebounds) that allowed them to arrive with eleven points margin at halftime (39-28).

The red revolution has reached the third quarter. The coach of Casademont, Carlos Cantero, did not know how to start seeing the bleeding of his team that has been left without the ability to react to the imperial confidence of Girona, who have reached over 20 points difference in several moments. The leaders of the Zaragoza side of the bench were the maximum expression of the impotence of Cantero’s team, which occupies the eighth place in the classification and in the next matches the participation in the Copa de la Reina is played.

In the last quarter Fontajau has started to jump. The reason: the score three minutes to go (85-45). After a short tussle with the defender, the fans finally tucked the ball home. The 2,720 fans, this time, made the pavilion shine and enjoyed a peaceful end to the game where, despite the difference of forty points on the scoreboard, they experienced basketball in all its glory. Today, Alfred Julbe will leave satisfied.
