World number 3 in the 2022/01/australian-open-2022-whos-who-in-the-djokovic-case/” title=”Australian Open 2022: Who's Who in the 'Djokovic Case'”>ATP rankings, Alexander Zverev will participate in the Montpellier tournament”>Open Sud de France, in Montpellier, from January 30.
A surprise return. Winner of the Open Sud de France in 2017, Alexander Zverev is back in Montpellier for the 2022 edition. The German was not on the program, but his early elimination at the Australian Open decided otherwise. As a reminder, the 3rd world player in the ATP ranking fell in the fourth round of the first Grand Slam of the year, suffering the law of Denis Shapovalov in three rounds.
Zverev wants to bounce back
In order to raise his head as quickly as possible, the German therefore took the direction of Montpellier. The organization of the Open Sud de France granted him a wild card. A godsend for Sébastien Grosjean, tournament director, and his teams. Indeed, in recent hours, Félix Auger-Aliassime had withdrawn from the ATP 250 tournament. The Canadian was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open by Daniil Medvedev, when he was leading two sets to nothing. Montpellier then lost its number 1 seed and member of the world top 10. An absence which is therefore compensated by the presence of Alexander Zverev.
Winner in Montpellier in 2017
The presence of the double winner of the Masters, Olympic champion in Tokyo in 2021 and finalist of the US Open 2020, is historic. Indeed, while the Open Sud de France is celebrating its twelfth edition, the tournament has never welcomed a player so highly ranked at the ATP. This year, Zverev will try to get his second title in the Hérault. In 2017, when he was still only a great hope of world tennis, he triumphed in the final at the expense of the local stage, Richard Gasquet. Five years later, the German will be the big favorite for this 2022 edition. Facing him, the presence of Gaël Monfils, Hugo Gaston, Robert Bautista-Agut or even Ugo Humbert are all confirmed.
