ARMCHAIR BASKETBALL/ELIM. WORLD DUBAI 2022: HEROICS, THE LEOPARDS –

For a first experience on the continental chessboard, the men’s leopards of the DRC offer themselves the third step of the podium at the end of the qualifiers for the world cup of the specialty, the final phase of which will be held the current year. in Dubai, capital of the United Arab Emirates.

To achieve this, the Congolese beasts dominated the Ethiopians (41-36) in the small final match, played on Saturday January 29 at Ras Hailu Stadium in Addis Ababa. Determined to do better, the Leopards took control of the game from the start, winning the first quarter (17-10). The hosts dominated the DRC in the second quarter (6-9). This reaction gave rise to a strong concentration and vigilance in the ranks of the Congolese, who gave tooth and nail to snatch the third quarter (10-7), before losing the fourth and last quarter (8- 10) against an Ethiopian team well in place and very disciplined tactically. The Congolese ambassadors of wheelchair basketball outdid themselves to master the assaults of their counterparts and snatch this third place, after a well-contested meeting.

A positioning that could place the DRC among the countries invited to take part in the great world mass of wheelchair basketball, planned for this year in the United Arab Emirates.

The DRC comes out of this qualifying phase with two victories including one on green carpet against Algeria (decimated by cases of Covid-19) and two defeats in the first round against the host country, Ethiopia (35- 41) and Egypt (15-75) who won this phase by finishing on the top step of the podium after their success in the final against South Africa and is automatically qualified for the world.
