Athletes in the playground

Until Friday, several high-level athletes from Béarn will interact with schoolchildren and college students during Olympic and Paralympic Week.

NSABATHIER

At least ten schools in Béarn have set up workshops and events as part of the “SOP”, Olympic and Paralympic Week (January 24-29). An annual event run by the National Olympic and Sports Committee and its relay at department level, the CDOS. Every year, a little more schools and colleges organize workshops and exchanges around sport and the values it conveys.

The objective: to promote the practice of sport among young people. A priority dear to the organizers of the Paris 2024 Games, in particular the president of the OCOG and Béarnais Tony Estanguet.

It is not surprising that the Marguerite de Navarre college in Pau, where one of his brothers is a PE teacher, plays the game. As every year, Aldric Estanguet and the other sports teachers offered two exceptional mornings to all fourth-grade students. On Monday and Wednesday, two international athletes from Béarn came to share sports workshops with these college students (biathlon thanks to laser guns provided by the UNSS, climbing and basketball) then discuss calmly with them about their daily lives as high-level athletes. . Paratriathlete Ahmed Andaloussi, 5th in the Tokyo Paralympic Games last August, who is preparing the sequel, in other words Paris 2024, and Benjamin Rénia, 2021 kayak slalom team world champion, also turned to the Paris Games, responded to the questions, which will notably be the subject of a publication by a few “student journalists” from the college.

In other schools, local international athletes have come or are about to come and share their experience and shine stars in the eyes of children: Bronze medalist at the world jujitsu championships, Sandra Badie met schoolchildren on Tuesday of Sauvagnon, when the freestyle kayaker of Sauveterre Jean-Yves Moustrou, 3rd of the last European championships, will go to the school of Ramous this Thursday. The schools of Gelos were also to receive athletes.

A national challenge with Thomas Pesquet

A great sportsman, astronaut Thomas Pesquet joined forces with SOP 2022 through a “challenge called “Mission 30 minutes”. All the schools that organize physical activity sessions as part of this Olympic week count the 30-minute segments of physical activity carried out… The idea being to reach 16 million minutes, the time it would take to travel the Earth-Moon round trip twice on foot.

Focused on the theme of sport, the environment and the climate, this 6th edition of Olympic Week has been the subject of other variations elsewhere in Béarn: two classes from the Labastide-Cérezacq school are creating an artistic work with the flame or the Olympic rings. Students from the Henri Perrot school in Lons carry out research on the various Paralympic sports. In Gelos, the municipality sets up workshops to enable students to discover new disciplines: running/trail running, paratriathlon, rugby, basketball and archery.
