The Australian Minister of Immigration canceled this Friday for the second time the visa of the Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, which gives way to his deportation from the country and not to participate in the Australian Tennis Open.
“Today I have exercised my power under section 133C(3) of the Immigration Act to cancel the visa of Mr. Novak Djokovic based on health and law enforcement reasons as being in the public interest,” said Minister Alex Hawke, in a press release.
“The Morrison Government is strongly committed to protecting Australia’s borders, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic,” the Australian official added.
Lawyers for tennis player Novak Djokovic are expected to file a document in court to challenge the immigration minister’s decision.
The resolution against the Serbian tennis player comes three days before the start of the Australian Tennis Open, of which Djokovic is the current champion.
The tennis player faces a ban from entering Australia for the next three years.
This is the second time Australian authorities have canceled Djokovic’s visa since he arrived in Melbourne on January 5.
At that time, the Australian Border Force reported that the tennis player “had not presented the appropriate evidence to meet the entry requirements” in that country, reports the TeleSur portal.
