Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos, in their first tournament of the season, are already in the semifinals of the Australian Open. The do has surpassed this Tuesday Filip Polasek and John Peers 7-6(5) and 6-4. It is the third time they have gone so far in a ‘major’ after the US Open 2019 and Wimbledon 2021.
It is the third time that the Catalan tennis player has reached the penultimate round of the first major, the first alongside Zeballos. He had previously achieved it in 2013 with Marc López, current coach of Rafael Nadal, and in 2016 with the Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas..
Marcel is two wins away from coming full circle. And it is that he only lacks one of the four ‘major’s in a record with 23 titles, including the Masters 1,000 category and the ATP master’s scepter. Not counting his three Davis Cups (2008, 2011 and 2019).
The third seeds, who circulate at the top of the draw, await the Australians Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis, executioners of Tim Puetz and Marcus Venus 7-5, 3-6 and 6-3.
