Before that, the two will offer a tennis show to fans at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena. The tie-break started in the first set, and Medvedev initially struggled in the game.
But the second in the world rankings from Russia secured the first two sets 7: 6 (7: 1) and 6: 4. In the third set, Kyrgios comes up short again with 6: 4. After three hours and four minutes, Medvedev gets his first two match points in the fourth set.
The Russian converts the first thanks to another “unforced error” by Kyrgios. Last year’s finalist is in the third round, where he will face Dutchman Botic van den Zandschulp (26).
Medvedev after the match: “It was a fun match because we both serve strong. In the second and fourth sets I started returning a lot more in the key moments. It was always clear that this match would be tight.”
