Australian Open: Novak Djokovic to participate again in 2023

Novak Djokovic apparently plans to return to the Australian Open next year.

Tournament Director Craig Tiley said yes in an interview. “Of course he still has to play this year, but that will be his intention,” Tiley told ABC TV: “After all, he’s number one in the world and he really loves the Australian Open.”

Djokovic is absent from the Melbourne tournament after a defeat in a federal court. The judges had rejected the objection of the world number one against the cancellation of his visa. The 20-time Grand Slam winner was unvaccinated and entered the country with a medical exemption.

Tiley’s statement is surprising in its clarity because it is unclear whether a three-year entry ban will be imposed on him. Daniel Andrews, Prime Minister of the State of Victoria, immediately emphasized that Djokovic would only be welcome if he was vaccinated. “It could all have been avoided if he had been vaccinated,” said the politician.
