The CSU member of the Bundestag Stephan Mayer, 48, is initially not allowed to exercise the office of Vice President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. Mayer, who worked as Parliamentary State Secretary until December, first had to wait for a waiting period of twelve months, the federal government decided after a recommendation by the waiting period committee headed by the former Finance Minister Theo Waigel (CSU). Newly resigned members of the government need a permit for new offices. When asked, the Federal Government does not provide any further information on the reasons for the decision, as the recommendation of the committee is not public.
Mayer was proposed as a candidate for the presidential post of the DOSB in November. A few days later he withdrew his application. At the early general meeting six weeks ago, he was elected vice-president. Now Mayer will not be able to exercise this office at all, as regular presidium elections are due in December 2022. “Since I have neither an official decision from the left-liberal federal government nor a relevant reasoning in this matter at the moment, I cannot, with the best of intentions, take a position on the matter,” Mayer said on request. The federal government announced that the decision was sent to Mayer by post immediately after the federal government’s decision at the cabinet meeting on January 5th.
The DOSB does not yet want to comment on the decision and possible consequences. In addition to Mayer and President Thomas Weikert, the former Olympic track cycling champion Miriam Welte, ex-para-athlete Verena Bentele, pediatrician Kerstin Holze and Oliver Stegemann (Sports Acrobatics Association) sit on the Presidium.
