At present, the Latvian delegation “Beijing 2022” has confirmed 57 athletes in 11 sports.
The Latvian team will include 32 athletes in individual sports and 25 representatives of the hockey team, a total of 57 athletes, will participate in the Beijing Olympic Games. In Beijing, our athletes will start in 11 sports, representing six winter sports federations – biathlon, bobsleigh, luge, skeleton, short track, figure skating, speed skating, Nordic duel, downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, hockey. Kārlis Lejnieks, the head of the Latvian Olympic delegation, describing the team, noted that a young Latvian Olympic team will go to Beijing, as the average age of athletes has dropped to 25.5 years, which is lower than in several previous Olympic Games.
“In addition, the 25 athletes will make their Olympic debut at the Olympics. “Experience and youth are the combination that will definitely shape the team spirit and strength in these games, and it will be stimulated by the strength of families and families – Dukuri, Shici, Aparjodi, Eiduki, Bondari, Kruzberg, Bucharest,” said Lejnieks.
Along with 57 athletes, the approved delegation list also includes 43 coaches, 4 sports doctors and 4 physiotherapists, while the team management and support staff travel to Tokyo with 9 people (athletes are deployed in 3 Olympic villages). The composition of the national hockey team will be specified on January 24. Also, until January 24, the Latvian Ski Federation will name the athlete who has been allocated the available quota for cross-country skiing. Baiba Bendika will start in two sports – biathlon and cross-country skiing.
In connection with the restrictions set by the organizers of the Olympic Games, the Latvian Olympic Delegation “Beijing 2022” must follow a certain Covid-19 protocol. It stipulates that each member of the Latvian Olympic team must take a Covid-19 test 96 hours and 72 hours before departure, which is repeated at Beijing Airport upon arrival. Participants must also take express tests every day while in Beijing and show their well-being in a special application every day. The Latvian team responsible for compliance with the protocol is Covid-19 official, LOV doctor Jānis Kaupe.
Currently, the Latvian Olympic delegation is fully vaccinated.
