Bundesliga 20th matchday

Two shots, three goals – BVB wins oddly against Hoffenheim

Stand: 22.01.2022

BVB is hot on the heels of FC Bayern Munich. Dortmund are the weaker team against Hoffenheim, but they use their few chances mercilessly. Gladbach’s crisis worsens. The 20th match day of the Bundesliga at a glance.

EMarco Rose has been with Borussia Dortmund for a good six months now, and he has already recognized the fundamental problem in the public perception of his employer. It’s dealing with stereotypes. “When we lose games, the big picture is always called into question relatively quickly. Our job is to make it as a team that we don’t constantly follow these clichés,” he said before the game at TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

The coach once again had to explain how his team, despite being superior during the week, was able to lose the round of 16 of the cup at FC St. Pauli 1:2. And the duel against Borussia also offered the hosts the chance to make amends. They lost 4-1 in the cup against Freiburg. What then happened on the pitch was spectacular. BVB won 3-2, until Dortmund’s third goal, which David Raum scored with an own goal, Borussia only had two shots at the opponent’s goal.

After five minutes, Erling Haaland completed a fantastic combination via Jude Bellingham and Donyell Malen. A goal worth seeing, which, however, did not give BVB security, but triggered a hello-awake effect in Hoffenheim. First Georginio Rutter failed on the post (11th), then Chris Richards only hit the crossbar (23rd). Andrej Kramaric completed the record of eight shots to one before the break with his 100th competitive goal for Hoffenheim (45 + 2).

Borussia Monchengladbach – 1. FC Union Berlin 1:2

Borussia won only one of the last nine competitive games, during the week they had disgraced themselves with the 0: 3 at Hannover 96 in the DFB Cup.

Against Union, the guard had to do without leading player Lars Stindl, who tore the inner ligament of his knee in training and will be absent for weeks. National player Jonas Hofmann played from the start for the first time after a six-week injury break. His team fell behind because Denis Zakaria, who was being courted by Bayern Munich, played the ball with his hand. Max Kruse converted the due penalty (18th minute of the game). Union pulled back a bit, Borussia took advantage: Manu Koné scored 1-1 (40th). In the second half, Mönchengladbach’s Luca Netz shot over the goal (77th). Bayer Leverkusen – FC Augsburg 5:1

In August it was 2-0 after 14 minutes for Bayer, but now Moussa Diaby scored the second goal in the 24th minute – Karim Bellarabi had previously scored the lead (9th). Arne Maier briefly gave Augsburg hope (62′), before Diaby (65′, 69′) and Lucas Alario (81′) scored for a clear win.

Greuther Furth – Mainz 05 2:1

Bottom of the table Greuther Fürth remains undefeated in the fourth game in a row: There was a strong 2-1 (1-0) against Mainz, also because Mainz managed to miss four big chances in the first half.
