Cameroon outclasses Ethiopia and qualifies for the round of 16

Cameroon dominated Ethiopia (4-1) on Thursday for a second victory in the CAN-2022. A second success which opens the doors to the knockout stages.

The law of nature has been respected: the Indomitable Lions have eaten the Antelopes. Despite a first half where it was jostled, Cameroon largely beat Ethiopia (4-1) Thursday, January 13 in its second group A match of the African Cup of Nations (CAN). A second victory which already offers him qualification for the knockout stages of the competition. Captain Aboubakar and Lyonnais Karl Toko Ekambi scored twice.

“3-0! 3-0”. Cameroon supporters only had this prognosis in their mouths before the match. After a shiny victory against Burkina Faso in the opening, they all hoped for a show of force to send a message to their future opponents in the competition.

A complicated first half

These same supporters must have had a few cold sweats in the first half. Especially when Hotessa cold picked the Indomitable Lions by anticipating the Cameroonian defense to deceive Onana on a cross from the right (4th, 0-1).

Fortunately, Toko Ekambi got his team back on track a few moments later. On a strike from Aboubakar rejected by the Ethiopian goalkeeper, Fai Collins sent a perfect cross on the head of the Lyonnais (8th, 1-1).

What to launch the Cameroonian machine? No. The lions are struggling to disrupt the Ethiopian block concocted by Wubetu Abate. Worse: as in the first game, the defense multiplies the losses of stupid balls in its camp, offering opportunities to the Ibex of Abyssinia. The latter, frustrated with a first match where they could not show anything because of a red card from the first minutes, unfold their game and even make their hosts doubt for a while.

Aboubakar, top scorer

The second period will shower their hopes of a feat. As against Burkina Faso, Vincent Aboubakar sounds the revolt. Already decisive passer for Toko Ekambi, Fai Collins addresses a real caviar for his captain (52nd, 2-1). Then served by Ngamaleu, he offered himself a second double in the competition (55th, 3-1). Enough to consolidate his status as the CAN-2022 top scorer.

Thrown in depth by Hongla, Toko Ekambi plays with his direct opponent and shoots Shanko (68th, 4-1) completing a victory which could have been even heavier as the Ethiopians suffered at the end of the game. He also offered himself the man of the match award.

On arrival, the demonstration requested by the supporters is there. Above all, the Indomitable Lions are now secure with 6 points to be in the top two of their group or at worst among the top four third. What quietly turn during the last group match Monday January 17 against Cape Verde and spare their strength for the rest of the competition.
