“Catania Sport Space“: This is the name that the municipal administration of Catania has given to a plan, defined as” strategic “, for the redevelopment of squares and urban spaces to be recovered by focusing on basic sports activities. A coordinated action that, in the intentions of the Municipality, will touch various areas of the city, aiming, with various interventions, to improve the quality of the green and at the same time to create spaces equipped for the practice of gymnastic-sporting activity in the open air.
The first redevelopment project concerns piazza Nettuno, on the seafront, with an expenditure of 540 thousand euros of community funds already allocated. The goal is to create an “intelligent” square, with the installation of technological and social innovation tools, and to redevelop the spaces by improving the supply of furnishings for recreational and sporting activities. In the square there is already a fitness area and a basketball court, both of which will be subject to extraordinary maintenance and upgrading of the lighting.
These are the words of the mayor Pogliese:
«With the coordination of the Department of Community Policies, Green Transition and Sport, headed by Sergio Parisi, of the homonymous municipal management directed by Fabio Finocchiaro and of the new Service specifically set up and entrusted to Paolo di Caro, we shared the need to coordinate the interventions and to harmonize according to a vision that focuses on raising the quality of life indices, the intelligent use of public space and outdoor sports, which have become a requirement in this era of pandemic. We start from Piazza Nettuno, but we will arrive very quickly in every area of the city, from the center to the suburbs, using this urban regeneration setting in a vision that aims at the well-being of the person».
