Santo Domingo. The management of the Boston Red Sox began the search for a new manager for the 2021 season and the Colombian Luis Urueta was one of the interviewees.
In the end, the Red Sox chose to bring back Puerto Rican Alex Cora, after serving a year of suspension for his participation in the scandal of stealing signs through technological means with the Houston Astros, when he was as bench coach.
In 2021, Cora led the Red Sox to the American League Championship Series against the odds.
At 41 years old and with a couple of seasons as bench coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Urueta sees Cora as a role model in the technical side of the best baseball in the world. His aspiration is to become the first Colombian manager in Major League Baseball (MLB).
“Alex is the model of every coach. He is young and a great connoisseur of the game”, said the pilot of the Gigantes del Cibao during the Caribbean Series that takes place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
“I was interviewed before Boston gave Alex the job back. He was back and did a great job. Just as he was given the opportunity to manage in the Major Leagues, I also hope that I will be given the opportunity at some point.”.
Urueta was a professional player. He played a short time in the Minors with the Arizona and St. Louis organizations. He also had an experience in baseball in Italy.
Then, in 2007, he began working with the Diamondbacks until becoming mentor Torey Lovullo’s right-hand man for the 2020 season. He also held that position last year. But this year he will have a new position as coordinator and ‘MLB player development’ on the big team.
While in the winter league of the Dominican Republic he guided the Giants to their second championship in history and will try to give the country the third consecutive title in this edition of the Caribbean Series.
For him it was the first title as a manager in the Dominican Republic. And during the season, Cora kept an eye on his work with the Giants.
“Alex is a great friend and throughout the season we kept in touch. He wrote to me to find out how things were going. And I always wish him the best for him in Boston,” Urueta said.
