David Goffin (ATP 45) is not out of the woods after losing 6-4, 6-3, 6-0 in the first round at the Australian Open against Daniel Evans (ATP 24). Beaten for the fifth in a row as soon as he entered a Grand Slam tournament – and for the fourth time without succeeding in winning a single set – the 31-year-old from Liège will thus also come out of the top 50 when the new ranking is published. Still N.7 in the world hierarchy at the end of 2017 after reaching the final of the Masters in London following victories against Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, David Goffin will indeed see 90 points fall from his accession to the third second round at the Australian Open in 2020, the ATP having adapted its ranking system following the Covid-19 pandemic. Result, of the races, the Belgian N.1 will drop at least six places, if not more depending on the results of its direct competitors, the Dutchman Botic Van de Zandschulp (ATP 57) or the French Adrian Mannarino (ATP 69), winner Wednesday of the Pole Hubert Hurkacz (ATP 11).
Virtually 51st, this is the first time since August 25, 2014 that David Goffin will come out of the top 50 at the ATP. At the time, he was 56th. The fall could even be even harder for the native of Rocourt in the weeks to come, because he will still have the 250 points of his title won at the ATP 250 tournament in Montpellier, at the end of February last year, to defend.
